Slow computers can be frustrating to use and they also waste valuable employee time.  The computer’s speed is affected by the hardware, software, and your Internet connection.

With hardware, you would typically upgrade memory, switch to a solid state drive, or bite the bullet and purchase a PC, Apple/Mac, or tablet that would run efficiently for the next three to five years.

Software runs “on top” of the hardware and a computer clean up can be performed within an hour! New PCs are preinstalled with software from the manufacture that is not required to operate the computer.  Running multiple anti-virus protection will also slow down your computer with very little added benefit to security.

Internet Connections vary between your Verizon DSL, Comcast Cable, and a mobile hotspot.  In addition, you may have issues with the wireless router or your web browser.  A simple switch from Microsoft Internet Explorer to Google Chrome or FireFox can also help to determine if your Internet problems exist within the browser or your connection.

Viruses and Spyware are one of the biggest preventable issues with PCs.  Most customers use the word virus to describe a virus, spyware, or malware.  Other threats exists as well…

If you have one of these, you may experience a slow computer.  You may also experience excessive popups and advertisements.

Some viruses will allow you to browse the Internet and other’s will lock down your computer.  Newer “ransomware” makes recovering files difficult, which is why a backup plan is important.

Virus and spyware removal typically takes about an hour.  In about 5% of the time, a virus cleanup results in reinstalling windows (after securing your files).

We can fix spyware and virus issues in our shop without an appointment or at your home or business by calling to set up a time.

A Windows reinstall may be necessary after a hard drive failure, Windows fails to boot, or you were infected by a nasty virus.

Here is the general process:

Hard drive test – Before installing, we can perform a hard drive test to make sure there are no problems detected.  OneGeek stocks a variety of desktop, laptop, and solid state hard drives to expedite repairs.

Backup Files – You are also given the option to have all of your files backed up.  We back up the entire computer so that you don’t risk losing your documents, pictures, music, email, email addresses, and favorites.

Reinstall Windows – Programs, viruses, and junk are removed from the computer.  This is called formatting the computer.  Windows is installed using the key code from the sticker on your computer.  Updates and drivers are installed.

Restore Files – Files are restored back into the correct locations.  The amount of time varies depending on the size of your files.

Install programs and setup email – Additionally, we can assist to install other programs or set up your email.  We can also return the computer to your home or business to set up the Internet, email, printers, and answer any questions that you may have.  Typically many customers will try to handle this themselves vs returning the PC, but we can normally do this at your location if that would be more convenient for you!

Carbonite has saved a few of our customers with its online backup service.  Carbonite is great because it’s very affordable, it’s automatic, and it’s offsite.

Carbonite’s price is great for home users, especially when you consider the costs to recovery files that have been lost.  Recovery prices start in the few to several hundreds of dollars.

Automatic is necessary.  With busy lives, backup is the last thing on someone’s TODO list.  With automatic backup, your documents and pictures are quickly sent to Carbonite.

An offsite backup is a bonus and rarely needed.  Offsite backup would protect against theft, fire, or hard drive damage (if you were backing up to the original harddrive).
